General, News, Resources

Tragedy struck on Friday as officers of the Nigerian Police Force shot and killed a middle aged woman in the NEPA junction area of Apo in Abuja.

The policemen numbering about 30 were said to have stormed the area in the early hours of the day for an undisclosed mission, their presence led the inhabitants of the area, mostly Gwari indigenes to believing they were there to enforce a demolition order. The Gwari youths took to the streets in protest and eventually the Policemen left only to return a short while later firing sporadically.

Eyewitness account said the deceased, an apprentice photographer was hiding in her boss’ shop when the bullet went through the glass door hitting her in the chest, she was immediately rushed to the hospital, but died on the way.

The death which further sparked the ire of the youths would have degenerated into further violence but for the intervention of the SSS and Army who convinced the police to leave.

When contacted, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Shinaba denied knowledge of the incidence and the operation.
